Real-time control of combined sewer systems: Risks associated with uncertainties

نویسندگان

چکیده

Model Predictive Control (MPC) of combined sewer systems can reduce environmental degradation caused by uncontrolled overflows. However, practical uncertainties are often neglected when assessing the potential MPC strategies. This paper aims to understand risks associated with using a non-perfect internal MPC-model, real precipitation forecast, and realistic dynamic system capacity fluctuations. An objective total overflow (CSO) volume was implemented in case study Eindhoven Netherlands where highly sensitive waterways receive Two types were identified: relative performance loss operative deterioration. The former entails decrease efficacy controlling CSO spills compared theoretical situation, whereas latter describes aggravation pollution static form operation. results obtained demonstrate that forecast uncertainty is small loss. Opposite this, significant observed as consequence model actual available. additional overflows statically optimised control for smaller events.

Real-time control of sewer systems using turbidity measurements.

Real-time control (RTC) of urban drainage systems has been proven useful as a means to reduce pollution by combined sewer overflow discharges. So far, RTC has been investigated mainly with a sole focus on water quantity aspects. However, as measurement techniques for pollution of wastewater are advancing, pollution-based RTC might be of increasing interest. For example, turbidity data sets from...

How Delft-FEWS incorporates real-time sensor data with dynamic modeling to allow Real Time Control of sewer systems

We discuss how Delft-FEWS is applied to incorporate real-time sensor data and dynamic modeling to allow Real Time Control (RTC) of three sewer systems in the area of the Hoeksche Waard, the Netherlands. The purpose of this project was to reduce sewerage spilling to the surface water by optimizing the available storage in the sewer systems. In this paper we will present how Delft-FEWS makes use ...

Analysis of Real-Time Control Systems with Time Delays

We discuss modeling and analysis of real-time control systems subject to random time delays in the communication network. A new method for analysis of given control schemes is presented. The state of the network is modeled by a Markov chain and Lyapunov equations for the expected LQG performance are presented. An example that illustrates the results is given.
